Write a Research Review Essay in response to the independent research you conducted. Your essay should take the form of a review of the research project and the sources you found, not a full-blown research essay. This is because we are relying on limited sources and would need further proof (more sources) and longer, more in-depth investigation in order to develop a full-blown research paper.
Your Research Review Essay should include the following:
An introduction:
Describe the topic you chose and explain your interest in it in an introductory paragraph. Tell the reader what your main research question was. (Yes, this paragraph looks a lot like the one you already wrote as part of your project proposal.) At the end of your introduction, include an overarching statement reviewing the results of your research. This will be your thesis. For example:

- “Overall, this was a successful project since I was able to identify three good sources that allowed me to answer all the questions that I had. The most interesting results of my research taught me that _________________, ______________________ and ______________________.”
- “I set out to learn about ______________ and while I did not find much information directly on that topic, I did find four sources that addressed the ways in which _______________________ happened, and that’s what stood out the most to me.”
- “I was excited to learn more about the __________________ and through the three sources that I reviewed, I learned not only that ______________________ but also ___________________________.”
- “I struggled to find sources about ______________- and two of them did not really help me to answer any of my questions, but the third source was very rich with information about ______________. From it, I learned ______________. If I had more time, I would look for more sources like this one.”
Historical context and background:
This will probably be your second paragraph. Provide the setting, as well as the historical context and background for your topic. When and where did it happen? Who was involved? What was going on at the time? How does your topic ‘fit’ with other themes or topics that we have explored in HIST 202?
Additional historical details about what you learned:
This is where you share your research and tell the reader all about your topic and what you learned. Include historical details and examples. This will fill-out your body paragraphs.
Conclusion:
Provide a closing paragraph, in which you re-cap your main points and reflect on the significance and relative success of your project. As part of your conclusion, identify any possible gaps or holes in your research. If you had more time, what would you do/research next?
List of Works Cited / Bibliography:
Provide a list of the sources that you actually consulted to write your paper. This may be the exact same bibliography that you already turned-in as part of your project proposal, or it may have changed a bit. Remove the annotations and make sure your list is in alphabetical order. Form & Format:
Your essay should be approximately 3 pages in length (it’s OK if it’s a little over or under 3 pages). You don’t need any fancy title page or anything, but a title is nice! Do be sure to provide a header with your name and the date. Double-space your essay and use standard margins and font size. Indent the first line of each paragraph. Please don’t add any extra white space (I am not super strict about length)
