Situate yourself in the American Colonies during the 18th century before the American Revolution. Roughly one-third of the colonists are loyalists and see themselves as being British; one third of the colonists prefer a revolution in order to be free from British control; and, one third of the colonists remain neutral toward revolution as they do not care, might not want to get involved, or do not want their lives disrupted. In a two to three (2 – 3) page paper that relies on the primary texts we read during the unit on the American Revolution, make a case for or against the American Revolution, i.e. persuade your fellow Colonists to take up arms or to remain loyal. When making this case, focus on the focus on the most important issues or rights (For example, here are some questions to consider when thinking about your case: Is there a right to revolution? Where does this revolution begin or end? Is the revolution warranted? Have the Colonists overstated their case? What other rights are important – property rights, being free from “unwarranted searches, the rights of Parliament as sovereign, etc. What are the limitations of property rights? When can the sovereign government interfere with property rights?) Please remember – you are trying to make an argument to persuade Colonists to take up arms against Great Britain or to resist the calls for Revolution and remain loyal. Like James Ottis, a good share of the public intellectuals conceived themselves as being British.
