Make an argument for why something is happening and/or what should be happening regarding any current news event. (More info in instructions)

Write an 9 page, persuasive research paper on a topic of your choosing that addresses the following prompt:

Make an argument for why something is happening and/or what should be happening regarding any current news event.
Persuasive research point that I chose: The government along with secondary educational programs (colleges, universities, trade schools, etc.) need to take into account and create more programs, scholarships/grants, resources for students who cannot afford school. Especially due to the effects of the pandemic on college students.
Be sure to apply the techniques of strong persuasive writing that we have covered in class. Use the elements of logos, pathos, and ethos (as a writer). Consider audience analysis in your use of counterargument and rebuttal, tone, and diction. Your paper should cite at least three outside, scholarly resources gleaned from academic journals or books. Please use websites such as “.org”, “.edu”, “.gov, etc. You also may use popular or news sources, such as news articles, general periodicals, and web sites. However, these should be above and beyond the three scholarly sources.
Type your assignment, double-spaced, using a 12-point font and 1-inch margins around the page. Type your name at the top of the page, along with “Final Paper” and the class name, as follows:
Jane Student
Final Paper
English 1020
Use MLA format throughout and include specific parenthetical references to your outside sources within the text of the paper and include a Works Cited page listing all outside sources in appropriate bibliographic format. The eight-page requirement DOES NOT include the Works Cited list; it should be separate and included at the end of the paper.
Check your work carefully for mechanical errors. In particular, be careful about sentence fragments, comma splices, run-on sentences, fused sentences, and subject-verb agreement. Check your writing carefully for spelling and typographical errors. If you have any concerns about writing mechanics, I suggest strongly that you visit the Writing Center at any of Tri-C’s three campuses to work with a writing consultant before submitting the paper.
Submit the essay as a Microsoft Word document attached to this assignment submission. You have the opportunity to earn 30 points for this work. I will divide the points between strategy (10 points –how you present your thoughts), mechanics (10 points –sentence and paragraph construction), and format (10 points –how your format your essay on paper and how the essay meets the formal parameters of the assignment, including using MLA style).
SELF-ASSESSMENT
On a separate page as the last page of your document, submit a one-paragraph self-assessment of your essay. Using the grading rubric below — which is the same rubric that I will be using to grade your final paper — evaluate your final paper. Write a paragraph that gives a specific number of points you believe you earned in each of the three categories of the rubric, along with supporting information about why you evaluated the final paper as you did. To be accepted as submitted, all assignments MUST have a self-assessment attached.
Grading Rubric: Final Paper

= Format (out of possible 10 points)
= Strategy (out of possible 10 points)
= Mechanics points (out of possible 10 points)

= Total (out of possible 30 points)

Format: Points are earned for writing a document that meets the specifications of the assignment: length, document creation and submission, paragraphs of appropriate construction (topic sentences and paragraph unity), use of the assigned number of scholarly sources, appropriate citation of scholarly sources, a correctly formatted list of sources used.

Strategy: Points are earned for using the rhetorical skills studied in the class: presentation of a clear thesis statement about a specifically chosen subject related to food, development of a cohesive argument supporting the thesis statement with concrete evidence from outside sources, deployment of transitional strategies to lead the reader through the text.

Mechanics: Points are earned for writing text that is free of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. One point is subtracted each time the reader encounters an “interrupter,” that is, an error weighty enough to interrupt a reader’s progress through the text (examples are sentence fragments, incorrect or no punctuation of compound sentences, incorrect word choice, misspellings, typographical errors).
