MAT-150 Topic 2 Project 1: Multiple Ways to Teach a Concept: Video Links Template #1

An important quality in a good math teacher is the ability to help students form connections with the subject. Teachers must make sure students understand the concepts rather than just memorizing the steps.  Not all students think alike so it is important that a teacher can explain things in multiple ways to ensure all students can learn.

Complete the attached “Project 1-Multiple Ways to Teach a Concept: Video Links Template 1” and submit to Instructor.

Class,

Before you begin Project 1, make sure you have read the instructions in the handout (under Course Syllabus) carefully.

I want to clarify some of the things, because every term, some students do not follow instructions carefully. Please read the following clarifications below, so that you will not be one of these students. The following will apply to each of the two problems.

Choice of problem:

  • Give a specific problem, not a general question.
  • Make sure you are solving the same problem using the two methods.
  • Please do not use a problem that appears in one of the videos. You may, however, make some minor changes in one of the problems, and use that problem.
  • You may use a problem that appears in a published source or on the Internet, but please let me know where you got it.
  • You may write the problem yourself.

Videos:

  • Make sure I can access both videos without having to open an account in a site, pay or free. The best advice I can give is to go to a free access site; YouTube and Khan Academy are good sources.
  • Give the URL as a link in the document (not text) so that it will open when I click on it.
  • Make sure that the methods demonstrated differ significantly (some similarity will probably be unavoidable – this is OK).

Solutions:

  • Make sure the solutions are detailed enough so that one doesn’t have to watch the video to know what you did.
  • Make sure the solutions differ significantly and that the methods used match the ones in the videos.
  • You may type the solutions in the given space or write them and scan or photograph them. You may also submit the photos in separate files. Please make them easy to read. A rule of thumb – make sure you can read it.

A brief note: Sometimes, when a student submits a project, one of two things happens:

  • The Similarity Score is (or seems to be) unusually high.
  • Photos seem to disappear, in part or in whole.

Do not panic if either happens. The Similarity Score is just a heads-up; there are perfectly legitimate reasons for a higher score. Also, the photos will invariably show up when I download the project. If there are any issues, I will contact you.
