Welcome to Discussion 5.1. In this discussion, we are going outside of the realm of only using our class materials to share in social justice discussions. Instead, you will find one article on the topic of social justice by searching the PO Library databases. We will call this a Mini-Literature Review, because it is for a discussion post rather than a paper, and you will only find one article to review rather than multiple articles for a more complex assignment.
Module 5 – Discussion 5.1: Researching the PO Library Databases – A Mini-Literature Review (Whole Group)
A Literature Review is an assessment of a body of research that addresses a research topic. The purpose is to identify what is already known about the topic you are researching. For this discussion, you will identify a topic in the arena of social justice and children’s stories, and/or social justice and children’s life experiences, curriculum, narratives, children as social justice advocates, and more!
You may narrow down your search by focusing on a specific aspect of a children’s lives in connection to social justice: home and family, ethnicity, socio-economic aspects, school life, health, community, and play, all within a focus of social justice. Research the PO Library Databases to find one peer-reviewed scholarly journal article on the topic you choose, and write about the article for your Initial Post.
To complete your Initial Post, you will write about the article you found in connection to children and social justice. Write at least two paragraphs of at least 10 sentences each. Tip: One paragraph could include questions #1 and #2. The second paragraph could include question #3 and prompt #4, the summary of the article addressing each sub-item. Write at least five sentences to address question #5.
1. What was the topic you researched to find your article? (The article needs to connect with a social justice issue and social justice needs to be named in the title of the article or the article.)
2. Why did you choose this topic?
3. What was the name of the article you found?
4. Write a summary of the article.
a. What was it about?
b. What was studied?
c. What did you learn from the article?
5. What did you learn from doing the PO Library Database Search?
In prompt #4, include at least one direct quote and/or paraphrasing from the article. Within your post include in-text citation and at the bottom of the post include References page information. Include a live doi or URL link in your References listing, so I can click on it and be taken to the article.
To support you in your research process, review Library Database Search video. There are Templates for citation of articles in the APA7 Help section of the PO Library Home page.
