A Closer Read of a Child’s Work
1. Introduction to the Process
Write about the process of collecting the story. How you chose the child, what you did to arrange for collecting the child’s story, and the setting in which you collected the story. (You will introduce the child further down on the list.)
2. First-Read of the Story in It’s Entirety
Re-read the story in its entirety.
3. First Impressions of the Specific Work
Write your first impressions of the story. As when someone might ask us, “So, how was the movie? What’s your take on it?” Or how we refer to first impressions being important when we meet someone. What descriptive words come to mind regarding your first impressions of the child’s work. In Written Assignment 2, you wrote about the child’s story of their work. Here you are writing about your first impressions of the work. In items 4 and 5 below, you will write about the work in more detail. Here you write about your first impressions.
4. First Close-Read of the Work
For a first close read of the story, go sentence by sentence, two or three sentences at a time, or paragraph by paragraph depending upon the length of the story, and then write and describe the style of the work and what is being said. Was the work a painting? A drawing? Something that was constructed? Describe the work in detail and what was said about it. What topic arose from the child’s story?
5. Second Close-Read of the Work
In a second close read, write to share more description. Now you are taking a second close look. What more description can you add about your impressions of the work.

Write about evidences of the child’s culture and cultural presence.
7. Sharing Final Description and Thoughts about the Story
Write to share any final description or thoughts about the story.

Telling our stories. This is the first step to social justice curriculum.
Use the child’s story to create levels b and c by:
b. I Engage in My Peer’s Stories

c. Taking Our Stories into Collective Action
