Monogamy: Chalmers and York offer a debate about the permissibility of monogamy. The debate rests on multiple pillars, including practicality, specialness, and jealousy. In your paper, offer a rehearsal of each side of the debate as it pertains to one of these aspects (taking 1⁄2-1 page per view). In what remains (and for the thesis of the paper), evaluate the state of the debate about that one aspect. The goal is depth over breadth. 1A few possible routes to consider and get you thinking: Does York adequately answer all of Chalmers’ concerns re: the aspect of monogamy that you’ve chosen? (No.) Are both sides missing an important piece of the picture that will help us better understand the moral permissibility of monogamy? Could Chalmers reply to York’s critique of his argument? Does he have lines of rebuttal available to him? (Don’t answer all of these questions in the paper, these are just a few prompts to get you started.)Your thesis could take on any of these different lines of inquiry, but should have a specific, clear, and focused intervention (e.g., Chalmers could respond to York’s critique that Y, York misses X critique of Chalmers that one could make, and so on).Criteria for an “A” Paper An “A” paper will:Ø Explain the appropriate views correctly.Ø Express and defend an original objection (or defense) of the views, offering a contribution to movethe conversation forward.Ø Execute a thorough, well-reasoned argument that will constitute at least 1⁄2 of the paper, although some writers may take more space than that to adequately develop and defend their ideas.Ø Consider the interlocutor/opposing view in the drafting of the piece, offering critiques that do not have an obvious (or neat) answer by “the other side.” The paper will not, for example, attribute false views to the other side or say things that the other side would challenge (or at least, it will do so in full recognition that the other side has a comeback).
