 A brief summary of the person’s life highlighting what you feel is important is
their experiences that led them to explore some aspect of human / environment
relations

About the book (80%):
ï‚· A one paragraph introduction of the book and the author(s)
ï‚· A summary of what you feel is the main message of the book and the main points
the author uses to back up this message
ï‚· A critical analysis of the book. First, what general comments would you make
about the author’s main message? Do you agree? Disagree? Explain your
position. Second, present a critical analysis of how the author presents his/her
viewpoint and case made to support their position (~3 pgs)
ï‚· Make sure you write a solid conclusion (1-2 parag.) to summarize the main points
you have made in your essay.
CRITICAL ELEMENTS FOR A GOOD GRADE:
ï‚· Any quotes taken from the book, must be documented in the paper with a
parenthetical reference that includes pg #s, e.g. (Smith, pgs. 342-3).
ï‚· When you use any additional sources that are critiquing the book or addressing its
influence or about the author(s), these also need to be cited in the essay with last
name(s), date of publication and pgs numbers, e.g., (Gibson 2020: 245-46). A
References Cited section must be provided at the end of the essay if you use any
sources apart from the book you read. Provide complete citations using either
MLA or APA styles.
