MUST HAVE READ THE BOOK “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe and “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats
While referring to “Things Fall Apart” refer back to the poem by Yeats “The Second Coming” and consider how the poem sets the tone and inspiration for “Things Fall Apart”.
Things Fall Apart can be divided into three sections:
1. The protagonist has a life before his world “falls apart” because of outside forces.
2. The outside forces change his life.
3. The protagonist responds to the situation: Does he stay the same (remain a static character) or change (become a dynamic character)?
Important points and/or questions to be answered in the essay- The impact of outside forces on the main character? How did these outside forces impact his center, his core, his perfect world? How did they make his world fall apart? Did the protagonist create his own problems as well as the outside forces? What happens after the outside forces come in and change things? Does the main character stay static and not change? Or is he dynamic and he rolls with the punches and changes as needed? Did he change overall? Were the changes good or bad? How did reading the story of this protagonist influence you or your beliefs?
Instructions for paper-
Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart, titled his book using a line from “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats: “Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.” After reading “The Second Coming” and the full text of Things Fall Apart, write an essay about the influence of outside forces and changing events on the life of the protagonist in the novel. Use the following questions to formulate your essay:
1. What was life like for the protagonist before the changes in his village?

3. Was the outcome predictable?
4. How did you feel about the outcome?
5. What is the impact of outside forces on the protagonist?
