TOPIC Case Study 1
When evaluating patients and families nurses may rely on a variety of different theoretical models to develop their care plan and guide their care. In the following patient situation, use a systems or health behavior theory to guide decision-making.
Jane Smith is a 49-year-old female patient who has been healthy throughout her life. She prides herself on her ability to face up to any challenge. She has two children, one who just started college and the other who just entered high school, and she is married. Her husband has his own business and is busy many nights with business affairs. She works full-time but has started to miss some days of work due to a chronic pain issue that started about six months ago. She feels no one in her family understands the problem and her physician is not listening to her concerns. She has come in today and is looking into using different modalities for the pain.
Questions to Analyze:
Summarize the theoretical model you would choose to work with this patient, including the concepts and assumptions of the
theory.
1. Explain how you would utilize this theory with this patient.
2. Describe how you would use the theoretical model to help the family understand the patient’s problem and concerns.
3. Analyze how the patient and family’s attitudes and beliefs can affect compliance with care.
4. Analyze the usefulness of the theory in your usual clinical setting.
