Without a doubt, the economy and its impacts on workers and society has been so complex and ever-changing over the past 35 years and will continue to change as time progresses generally, because the American economy shifted from manufacturing-based work to service work. This is a result of the world becoming a more globalized place. American companies realized the potential revenue in off-shore/outsourcing jobs that could be done cheaper in other countries. This practice of using cheap labor has led to dramatic changes in America’s economy as it has led to millions of Americans falling into unemployment. In a Pew Research Center report they highlight the key issue is fewer jobs require physical or manual skills to social analytical skills, which shifted in the demand for higher education levels, job training, certifications etc. However as we begin to investigate corporate americas practice of utilizing cheap labor we will soon see how this is spreading into white collar america leading to the question; When will we address the need of keeping jobs in america.
Offshoring/Off Sourcing Jobs that are STEM based in the United States and the potential negative outcomes of this practice
Because of the option of offshoring jobs much has changed for the average blue collar worker. Although unions exist and continue to serve the workers they represent. There is little that can be done if the company simply decides to take their business to an entirely different country. So Workers currently have to adapt to changes due to the economic state, thus leading to longer work hours, lower incomes, less work benefits and subpar work conditions in some cases. All of this because the factories that do still remain understand that these workers are in a situation where there is little that they can do. Moving to a different region is too expensive, the pure cost alone of getting more education is out of reach. And it is not as if companies do this as a closed door practice, one will only have to look at the working conditions of amazon and the stories of employees experience working in their warehouses. In fact only after employees had made these concerns nationally known was amazon finally condemned by the federal government. But even this punishment of a fine does not affect the company that generates billions a year. However the alternative of losing these jobs are far worse for the community as the PBS documentary shows us. When a factory shuts down we are left with a spike of crime rates, drug rates also increase, and overall more and more Americans falling into poverty.
However most Americans have been able to ignore the effects of outsourcing and outsourcing, as these jobs require little college education or technical skills. But this may not be
the truth for much longer. Jobs that would be considered to require a bit more skill and training.
In a study conducted to see which jobs were currently being the most off-shored we can see that there has been a shift towards stem based careers.Affecting the jobs of several different industries. An example is within architecture firms, companies are hiring people in China to do computer renderings and programming of floor plans rather than hiring and paying for employees on state side since typically it is an “entry-level position” for people being hired. But why is this, well employers began to ask themselves, why hire and pour in paychecks, supplies, onboarding and training, and benefits? If I can pay someone overseas a small cost for a project? Although it is a short-term benefit of saving money now, it’s costing the American economy and well-being and the development of job markets. This simply creates a deeper divide in the job market as now more people are expected to achieve more levels of educations like PHDs or Masters which are more costly on top of the already pricy tuition costs. Something this generation has made clear is a issue and our government has failed to address.
