This is my initial proposal of paper which got a 50/50
People are getting caught cheating every single day. Yet still, people continue to cheat because it is convenient and it is getting to be more common than ever. One reason people cheat is because of stress, too many classes, or teachers that leave too much work. I had one of those teachers last semester and I got a D+ and failed the class. I got sick and had absolutely no energy to work on essays etc. I had five classes and got As in four of my other classes, the teacher was not able to accommodate my illness is why I failed and will have to take the class at my expense. I wrote to her about it and she replied “I appreciate your desire to make this my fault because I’m not “nice” but I think that if you look at your test scores you’ll realize you didn’t master the material. This is where I disagree, I learned more in that class than in any other of the other classes, and had I cheated, I would have easily passed, but I chose not to because I don’t want to pass a class by cheating. Down the road, we will be required to know the material and I think that cheating is just an avenue that maybe is shorter than not cheating but it does not serve anyone in the end. I think that not being able to take a test because of health should be accepted and accommodated, Granted a lot of people take advantage of this and there has to be a point where teachers draw the line. I think that if a student is proactive and asks in advance they should be given a chance. I’ve been told by teachers that it would not be fair to other students, and my answer is, other students are not sick and they are not asking for you to be “nice” and accommodating. Most of the time (as with four out of five) of my last semester teachers, they are reasonable, but when a teacher is unreasonable, and by unreasonable I mean 125 questions in 75 min with multi-tier questions included and no breaks, they are asking students to cheat in order to be able to pass the class. Which I did not do and that got me to fail my class. There are consequences to cheating, which will vary by the way the cheating took place. Being rational and giving a normal amount of work should be supervised so that cheating is not occurring. Sometimes students will cheat regardless and that is when the consequences are greater. Penalties range from failing one exam to possibly being expulsed from the institution, depending on the severity of the offense.
In order to be successful in a class, especially online, you need to manage your time appropriately and work on assignments on time so that you are not cornered into wanting to cheat. Getting outside help sometimes is good, but getting too much help can be considered cheating. If you get a tutor to explain what the work is, can be helpful but if the tutor is doing your work or homework, then that might be considered cheating and part of Academic Dishonesty. I think it is a big problem nowadays. I appreciate the teachers that not only provide the right amount of material but tests that are not too hard so that you are learning as you go and also as you are answering your tests. Making tests impossible to answer is a big problem. I have a teacher that makes the tests so hard that it is tempting to cheat in order to get a good grade but I have not cheated because I am trying to get the hang of the class without having to cheat. Having clear instructions is very important so that students are learning and not cheating.
