“The power of language to share our perceptions of other people is immense. Precise use of terms in regards to gender and sexual orientation can have a significant impact on demystifying many of the misperceptions associated with these concepts. However, the vocabulary of both continues to evolve…” This quote comes from PFLAG’s websiteLinks to an external site.. PFLAG is the nation’s first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents, families, and allies.
As noted on the Module 4 Overview page, Benokraitis and Buehler’s (2019) textbook–Marriages & Families (9th ed.)–contains inaccurate and insensitive terminology and definitions. In Module 2, you learned about how researchers’ and practitioners’ biases can have negative effects on families. The aim of this journal entry is to critically evaluate the terminology in chapter 7 of the textbook against the terminology on this website.
