Parents Talk and Early Adolescent Girls Talk: Sleep versus Homework and Social Media

Adolescents are growing quickly in many different ways and require almost as much sleep as do young children. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, adolescents get significantly less sleep than they need. Watch this video to see examples of factors in the lives of adolescent girls that leave them with inadequate time to sleep.

1.What are some factors that kept the girls up late?

2.What reasons for getting enough sleep did one parent mention that she had discussed with her daughter?

EACH video case question must be answered with a minimum of FIVE meaningful and well-developed sentences PER question – 1 point per sentence for a total of 10 sentences/points. Your responses should be thoughtful, reflective, well-written, grammatically reviewed, and complete answers to the questions.

I would say as Lane has entered high school, she’s had more pressure on homework and activities. And that’s just bled, you know, into the night later and later. To the point that we try to say, you know, get your homework done early. Because we see the pattern where she’ll be up to 1:00 a.m. She’s up till 1:00? She’s up till 1:00. And she, you know, she’s up at 7:00. Oh, wow. I don’t really get enough sleep usually. I mean, like, my parents can tell me, like, that I’ve-I’ll be up so late doing homework that it’s not even, like, worth it. Because I’ll come to school the next day and I’ll just be exhausted. But, I mean, my parents can tell me, like, you’ve done enough homework; go to sleep. But it’s not like I’m just going to not do my homework. Like I, I still feel like I have to get it done. I so dread getting up in the morning. And like I hit the snooze button so many times until I can like- . . . until I’m like, okay, you’re going to miss your first class if you don’t get up right now. I would say we struggle with it quite a bit too. And one of the things I think that contributes to it is that Lucy is wired as a night owl. I mean, she doesn’t- . . . she really has her most energy in the evening. So she naturally wants to stay up late. And then they do have to get up at, you know, 6-ish in the morning. I don’t have as much homework as you guys. But like I have homework, a good amount of homework. And then I have sports also, which keeps me up late. And I’m just like, I do not go to bed early unless I’m exhausted. So, like they can tell me to go to bed, but like, I will not be able to go to bed until like at least 11:30. She’s in bed by 10:00. So- . . . and I think one thing I stress is that how sleep affects skin issues. And your moods. Yes. Yeah, and your diet, yes. And you’re going to be grouchy. And your diet. So, so far she’s listened to me and she- . . . Yes, so she goes to bed willingly at ten? Yes. She- . . . like by 9:30 she should have showered and 9:30 goes into bed. I feel like I always go to bed after my parents now. Like- . . . Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like they used to like tuck me in. And now like I feel like I’m tucking them in because I’m in bed a lot later than them with a high workload from school. Well, it’s a really bad habit, but like I charge my phone- . . . I have my alarm on my phone, so I keep it charged near my bed. Which obviously I’m going to be on my phone right before I go to sleep. And I, I read somewhere that it like makes your brain like active and it’s harder to go to sleep. So it’s like, I should really stop doing that. But it’s so addictive. I feel like it’s part of my routine like before bed like at least 15 minutes I’ll be like checking all my social media, updating everything, responding to all my snap chats. And then like once all that’s done I can like put it aside. But, yeah, I’ll set my alarms on my phone. And it’s charged right next to my bed. So like if a notification pops up it like just keeps adding time to like when I fall asleep. I like noticed that I did that. And then I moved my phone to the end of my bed. So that in the morning I would actually get up and turn it off, like my alarm. And then I have a- . . . usually on the weekends before bed I like go on my computer for a while. And then I just like put my phone away so I don’t get distracted and stuff. That’s smart. I probably couldn’t like- . . . I’m so attached to my phone and it’s really sad. But I don’t want to, like I feel like I’m going to be missing out on something if I like- . . . Yeah, me too. And the sad truth is that most of the time I’m not missing anything. Yeah.
