The idea of Freedom is central to many people’s conceptualization of what the United States is
about. Of course, this idea has been and continues to be debated, and looks different depending
upon one’s position and perspective. From American Revolution to the Era of Reconstruction,
choose one event, or one figure, or one case to discuss how different people have worked to expand
freedom, and how other people or forces have worked to contract freedom. Throughout the course,
we have seen how the United States went from being a rather average and primarily agricultural
country to being the world’s largest economic and military power. In your paper, please include at
least SIX (6) sources that help support your arguments and propel the US to its current position.
This paper is intended to test your ability to grasp and summarize the main point of your arguments,
find supporting evidence, make a comparison, and then criticize the other sides. The format of your
