ASSIGNMENT: In this speech, you will share and substantiate your perspective about an idea
or an issue of importance to you. You will CHOOSE A PROBLEM and then ARGUE A
SOLUTION.
GUIDELINES:
Pay close attention to the following when preparing your speech:
• Clear problem: what is the problem you are addressing?
• Clear thesis: What is the solution you are arguing?
• Clear connection to the audience: Why should they care?
• Introduction: attention-getter, relevance to audience, thesis statement, preview.
• Conclusion: restate thesis, summarize main points, decisive close.
• Supporting materials: include a minimum of five source citations throughout
your speech. Support each main point with a variety of supporting material:
examples, statistics, testimony, narratives, definitions.
• Quality of argument: Rational? Logical? Compelling?
• You must introduce the opposing argument and refute it during your speech.
• Typed, proofread formal outline.
