Photojournalism Article – Life During a Pandemic Due Beginning of Class Week 10
Develop a 750 – 1000 word article that addresses the following:
PROMPT: You are a photojournalist reporting on the effects of a pandemic on a community different from your own. You will use a combination of visuals and text to describe the lived experiences of an individual and their community based on the pandemic you have chosen. The individual experiences you describe should be those of an imaginary character, but the consequences of the pandemic on their lives and community must be based in fact.
How should you begin?
Step One: Choose the pandemic you will research from the list below: (Faculty can alter the pandemic options.)

> Cholera (There were six major outbreaks so choose a particular episode.)

Create a profile for the main character of your article:
The name, age, country of origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, and economic status of the character you are creating will be important. Their identity will determine the outcome of your article. The pandemic you have chosen will influence the development of your character’s identity and experiences.
Design a preliminary portrait of the character as you see them in your mind and use Google to research potential images of the individual and their environment.
Discovering Your Character’s Story
Step Two: Research the history associated with the pandemic you are studying.
a) Research the history of the country before and during the spread of the pandemic you have chosen.
b) Use this research to help you develop and refine a fictional narrative for the character you will be profiling in your article.
c) In your fictional narrative, you must create a scenario for the conditions the character is experiencing due to the pandemic.
d) You have creative license. Your character could describe their entire experience in one geographic location, or they could be forced to relocate during the pandemic.
e) Make sure your project includes an explanation of the factors causing your character and their community to experience the pandemic in the ways you are reporting.
Research Documentation:
You must research this assignment and include a Works Cited page with at least one Annotated Source and two citations. Your paper should follow the MLA Format and Citation Requirements. This means in-text citations are also required for factual information. (Please refer to the Foundation Level 3-Outcome Rubric in the Nest).
