The dawn of the 20th century represents the high point of possibility in America. Scientific wonders like the car, the plane, and the telephone made ANYTHING seem possible. This attitude found a home in government as well. President’s like Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson believed that good government and legislation could work to produce a better society for all….that PROGRESS could be made through beneficial legislation. The movement itself was varied and certainly not without its faults. But it gave us some WONDERFUL achievements. Pick two pieces of progressivise legislation (or a failed piece of legislation….both will require significant outside research) and explain how the legislative victory correlates to the promise of a better world and a better society. You may pick ANY piece….but here are a few suggestions
ANY OF THE CONSITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS FROM THE TIME PERIOD
The antiquities Act and the creation of the National Park and National forestries services.
The Pure Food and Drug Act
The Hepburn Act
The declaration of War on Germany in 1917
Wilson’s famed 14 points and the Treaty of Versailles
Bonus points for picking something NOT on this list.
After you have selected your piece of legislation and explained how the objective of the law was to make society PROGRESS answer the following:
Did the legislation achieve its objective?
Why do you think it failed or succeeded?
