Please respond to one of the following questions below. Be sure to use
textual evidence and primary citations in your answer to support your
argument, as well as provide a topic sentence regarding your perspective
about any two of the works that we have discussed thus far, including The
Crucible, Bartleby the Scrivener, Inherit the Wind, and/or To Kill a
Mockingbird. Your essay should be a well–organized response of between
600 and 1,000 words.
1. Discuss the depiction of lawyers and/or the legal profession in any two of the
works that we have read thus far. What does the characterization of these figures
say about the nature of the legal profession? In what ways do the authors under
review provide positive depictions of lawyers and/or the law? By contrast, in what
manner do these characterizations act as forms of negative critique of the legal
profession? Be sure to use specific textual evidence in your response.
2. Aristotle once observed that “the law is reason, free from passion.” Discuss
the manner in which passion drives characters to act in certain ways that are
unreasonable in any two of the works that we have read thus far. In what manner
do these passions impel the characters to take the law into their own hands?
Conversely, in what ways do other characters in these same narratives act
reasonably in spite of the out–of–control passions and/or nonsensical behaviors of
other members of their communities? Be sure to use specific textual evidence in
your response.
3. Pascal once wrote that “nothing gives rest, but the sincere search for truth.”
Discuss depictions of the search for truth in any two of the works that we have
read thus far. Are these truth–establishing efforts sincere or, by contrast, are they
designed to compel other members of the characters’ communities to accept their
personal views? In what manner do they manipulate the legal system in order to
support their own belief systems, no matter how unreasonable or unscientific they
may be? Be sure to use specific textual evidence in your response.
