The purpose of this assignment is to explore a contemporary social welfare concern (e.g., climate
change, homelessness, immigration), assess its historical and current context, and analyze 1
relevant social policy.
Specifically, your paper should include a critical analysis of the following:
1. Provide a brief overview of the social welfare concern, including: a) How the concern
developed, b) The current scope and impact of the concern, and c) How issues of oppression
contribute to differential impact for certain populations.
2. Using course concepts, explain how this concern constitutes a form of injustice (e.g., human
rights, economic, environmental).
3. Identify one (1) social policy that has either contributed to the perpetuation of the social
injustice or that was enacted to address the social injustice. Provide: a) A brief background of
the social policy, and b) Who were/are the major players.
4. Using a policy analysis framework, analyze the social policy you identified. Make sure to
include potential gaps, critiques, or unintended consequences of the policy you identified.
5. Identify the social work profession’s position on the social welfare concern AND cite at least
one (1) example each of how the social work profession led to positive change and also
exacerbated unjust conditions for vulnerable populations.
6.Discuss why you chose this social welfare concern and how your social identities and values
impact your perspective. This paper should be 5-7 pages, substantially integrate at least 5
references, including at least 3 outside sources, and adhere to proper APA formatting (7th ed.)
