RECOMMENDATIONS, and BIBLIOGRAPHY. LITERATURE CITED will appear on a separate page.
These will include:
PURPOSE – here you state the purpose of the brief. In 1-2 sentences, overview why your topic is an ethical
challenge and why it is relevant to the organization you are briefing.
BACKGROUND – detail the relevant facts of the issue. Who are the main stakeholders with vested interests
in the issue? Why does this topic represent an ethical challenge? What evidence is available to identify the
challenge? For how long has this issue existed? Was previous action taken before (if so, was it successful)? Have
others already identified concerns similar to the one you will discuss in the brief?
CONCERNS – identify up to three major concerns with the direction that things are currently headed. This
will depend on the case. It may be useful in this section to summarize and cite news articles (use reputable
journalistic sources) or reports from governments or non-profit organizations who share these concerns.
RECOMMENDATIONS – provide 1-3 recommendations for how the issue should be approached. Is
additional research needed to come to a possible solution? Which concerns are the most important and need
to be addressed first? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the plan you propose? Be specific, and link
recommendations directly with concerns. You should not be citing outside sources here; these are your
recommendations.
LITERATURE CITED – use author-date citation the text of the brief and cite all literature in APA style. This
should be on an additional page
