IN ORDER TO PROPERLY COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT, YOU NEED TO HAVE COMPLETED POLICY ASSIGNMENT 1. IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO, PLEASE DO SO NOW.
One potential way to get your policy enacted is to use the institutions of Political Parties and Interest groups. They are powerful tools that work within the system, so to speak, that can advocate and enact your desired policy goal. One way to understand how politics and power work in the United States is to think about how these two types of institutions work. Take your proposal and analyze the following pathways to take to make your proposal a reality:
First, which of the two major political parties would be most interested in adopting or pushing your proposal. Why do you think this party would work the best? (Try and back up your answer by, for example, citing the Party Platform or citing a bill that has been proposed by members of your chosen Political Party. Look to any News or Statements that might help you figure out which major party would support you.)
Second, as with Political Parties, do some research and try to find an Interest Group that might be interested in helping you and promoting your proposal. As you might imagine there are a lot more Interest Groups than Parties so it may take some time to find one that fits your proposal. Explain why this group would work for your proposal. (Once again, try and cite something that the organization has said or done to support your argument.)
Third, while a Party or Interest Group will be interested in your proposal because they share a similar ideology to yours, selling it to the broader public will require a more broad approach. In the context of an election, how would your candidate or Interest Group message to the public about your proposal? Don’t worry for now about what media to use as that will be covered in a different lesson. For now, try and figure out why the broad public would want to agree with your proposal and how you would convince them.
For each prompt, write 2 to 4 paragraphs explaining your choices and arguments.
