Post Week 3 DB Analysis: What kinds of social policies facilitate upward mobility?

Directions for ALL weekly DB posts:

Each week you will write 2 DB posts to earn the full 3 points for the weekly DB assignment. Follow the length and content guidelines to earn full credit. Any posts that plagiarize fellow students’ work or online sources will receive zero points. Put everything in your own words, always.

The first post (worth 2 points): You will explain a key sociological concept for the week by applying it to the prompt (usually a short video clip, report, or interactive data set). End your first post, always, with a sociological question about the data presented in the prompt. Do not ask ethical questions (what “should” be done, what is “good” or “bad” about XYZ). Instead, ask a question about how this aspect of society works, or ask an empirical question about this aspect of society. This first post should always be at least 125 words long – a full paragraph, 5-6 sentences minimum.

The second post (worth 1 point): You will also write a second post (worth 1 point) that replies to a fellow student’s question and should be about 125 words long.

This week: how social policies shape upward class mobility

Watch this short videoLinks to an external site. on the different life trajectories for two young people, one born in Denmark and the other born in US and review this global ranking of social mobilityLinks to an external site.; you will see that Denmark has the most upward mobility in the world, while the US ranks 27th.

In your first post:

1) Identify two of the most important social policies in Denmark that help create intergenerational mobility for its young people, drawing on what’s included in the video. Explain sociologically how these policies enable upward mobility, based on what you have learned about capitalism and class inequality from the lecture and reading this week. As always, end your first post with an empirical sociological question about the topic (avoid ethical questions here please).
