This is an academic essay that asks you to draw on theories and debates explored in the module in the discourse analysis of a particular cultural text.
• Your selection of which cultural text to analyse will be very important. It must be complex enough to bear sustained analysis.
• Try to be original in your selection, and choose a text you are personally interested in.
• The title of your essay is up to you. You can write your own essay question if you like. All you need to do is make sure that it follows the instruction in the ‘description’ above.
• As with all essays, you will be expected to do your own research as well as draw on recommended readings.
Examples
Here are some examples of cultural texts that past students have chosen to analyse in a similar assessment:
• Notting Hill Carnival
• Herbal Essences shampoo
• tattoos
• Grand Theft Auto
• Kim Kardashian
• Skin-lightening creams
• Glastonbury festival
• Black hair
• Modest fashion
•Snapchat
I give you these examples just to show you the breadth of topics that students have engaged with. They might give you some ideas, but there are lots of other things you could write about that aren’t on this list. Four essays from previous years are up on the blackboard to give you an idea of how students have approached a similar assignment in the past. Remember, though, there is no ‘right way’ of going about it!
Assessment criteria
