PROJECT TWO – Production Design Concept

Including: Visual research, Image boards, Written design rationale

2800 word equivalent (70% of subject grade).

I CHOSE THE SCRIPT EXMACHINA, THE SCRIPT IS ATTACHED AS A DOCUMENT

THE TWO SCENES TO ANALYSE FROM EXMACHINA FOLLOWING THE BELOW RUBRIC HAVE BEEN ATTACHED AS DOCUMENTS

Introduction

For this project you will create a design statement, script breakdown and series of image boards which articulate a hypothetical design for the script listed below. Your project will demonstrate what you have learned through the lectures and tutorials about the choices Production Designers make in creating a film’s design and how these choices can make the film richer, engaging and more meaningful.

Brief

I selected Ex-Machina Script. Read it in its entirety at least once.

1. DESIGN STATEMENT

NOTE: This relates to the entire script.

Articulate your overall design concept for the whole film clearly and concisely in a 1000-word statement to include:

· Detailed design description for all of your key design choices (Mood, Colour, Location, Set Dressing, Props)
· Written rationale providing deep analysis as to why these decisions have been made.

2. SCRIPT BREAKDOWN

NOTE: This relates to selected scenes only – see below.

Prepare a clear and thorough art department script breakdown on the template provided, for the selected scenes only, to include all scripted and implied items relating to the art department under each relevant column heading.

3. IMAGE BOARDS
NOTE: This relates to selected scenes only – see below.

Compose 1 x A4 image board for EACH heading below, for each of your script’s selected scenes (ie. 10 boards in total).

  • Image boards must be clear, refined, detailed and named
  • These should strongly resonate with the story and characters while communicating your own unique take on the design.
  • All images must be correctly cited and listed at the end of the PDF file submission, refer to Assessment Support below.

BOARD HEADINGS:

1.  Mood
2.  Colour
3.  Location
4.  Set Dressing
5.  Props

Assessment Criteria

The Production Design Concept will be assessed with the following criteria:

  • Written Design Description and Rationale clearly describe the design concept and successfully outlines all key aspects of design choices with deep analysis. (approx. 1000 words)
  • Written breakdown of the selected script scenes (using template provided) is thorough and detailed, including scripted and implied items required for the design.
  • The mood of the design is communicated effectively with appropriate imagery.  (2 x A4 page of cited images).
  • The colour palette/scheme is communicated effectively with a focus on tonality, texture and contrast. (2 x A4 page of cited images)
  • The locations for the design are clearly communicated using suitable imagery that clearly illustrate the qualities of the space/s. This MUST include one exterior image followed by images of the interiors. (2 x A4 page of cited images).
  • The set dressings – scripted and implied for the design are clearly communicated by suitable reference images. (2 x A4 page of cited images)
  • The props for the design are clearly communicated using appropriate imagery. You must provide images for all props in the scene. (2 x A4 page of cited images)

*Written word total to be approx. 1400 words. Images hold weight like words – so be thorough with your visual research (1400 word equivalent).

SCREENPLAY ANALYSIS

  • “How would you describe this film?
  • Identify its particular genre and how does this inform the design approach (eg science fiction, period, etc)?
  • Considering the plot, what do you think this film is about?
  • What could it be about on a deeper level? Themes? What is it commenting on? What is it saying about the world we live in? etc.
  • What opportunities does this film offer a designer?
  • What challenges does it pose?

IN-DEPTH DISCUSSION ABOUT PROJECT 2 – Selected Scenes

  • Colours
  • Feelings
  • Themes of the story
  • Philosophical meaning
  • Styles of architecture
  • Ideas about the space
  • Angles, lines
  • Types of surfaces
  • Memorable phrases/dialogue from the script
  • Character traits etc

Then look more specifically at the two scenes that you need to develop design concepts for.

SCENES FOR PROJECT 2

  • What happens in these scenes?
  • Why do you think they were chosen for you?
  • How are they different from each other?
  • Is there a particular mood for each scene?
  • What opportunities does this scene offer a designer?
  • What does this scene need from the design?
  • What challenges does it pose?
