Before beginning this assignment, it would be a good idea to review Chapters 7-8 of the Fitzgerald text and view this clip about educational segregation. In addition, the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey offers an interactive map of the racial demographics of every census block in the United States.

There are (3) Parts to this assignment. Review each part and address the prompts provided for each part.

Part 1 (20 points)

  1. Describe the racial composition of one of the following metropolitan areas: Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI; Cleveland-Elyria, OH; Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, Wisconsin; St. Louis, Missouri and Illinois; Chicago, Illinois, Naperville, Indiana, and Elgin, Wisconsin.
  2. If there are areas that are close to being mono-racial (almost all white or almost all Hispanic, for instance), explain why that might be. To what extent do you think this is intentional? Provide some evidence to support your assumption by conducting web searches for reports of racist activity (e.g. KKK; redlining, white flight, discriminatory bank practices, housing covenants or deindustrialization. Think about community stories you may have heard, and so forth.)
  3. What can be said about racial segregation along class and economic lines?
  4. Do you see differences between regions in the United States with respect to the overall racial/ethnic demographic makeup (e.g. North, South, Midwest, East Coast). What do you think accounts for regional differences in racial makeup?

Part 2 (10 points)

  1. What benefits or disadvantages could be linked to living in the urban areas you chose?
  2. Do you think racial segregation in housing and racial segregation in schools are somehow linked in the U.S.? How? (feel free to consult valid online sources for some ideas)

Part 3 (20 points)

Education has been an increasingly important prerequisite for employability in the U.S. and other industrialized countries. A high school, and increasingly, a college degree has become the minimum entry-level requirement for employment. However, opportunities for high-quality education are not distributed equally across the populations. Take a look at the article from USA Today that shows states with the most segregated public schools and shifts in segregation from years 1954-2011.

  1. How has educational segregation changed over time for African Americans?
  2. Has the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) been effective in eliminating educational segregation in schools? Why or why not?
  3. What do you think should be done to address housing and educational segregation today in the United States?
