Must Read Everything:

Reply to at least two classmate’s posts, applying the RISE Model for Meaningful Feedback

I will also show an example below of how the response needs to be addressed.

Here’s an example of how the response should look. Please don’t copy it.

The response to the classmate need to be just like this.

Example Response (Response Needs to be writen just like the response below No copying)

RISE Feedback:

REFLECT: I concur with “Action plans should reflect the type of services that are needed and have an idea of the expected outcome of the services” because it is in line with Hatch and Hartline’s intentional school counseling guidelines in regards to determining students needs.

INQUIRE: Can you further explain what “closing-the-gap action plans” are?

SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts.

ELEVATE: What if you re-purposed “For example, after a needs assessment, the school is having problems with bullying” as “Following Trish Hatch’s MTMDSS tier based interventions, if the school is having problems with bullying, after a needs assessment, we could… citation…”  for a more weighted argument?

Response 1- Courtney

According to McMillan (2016), some challenges with reviewing research and interpreting evidence-based practices are as follows:

  • Source Selection: With many articles and journals available, you must ensure the literature is from a credible source of high quality. Secondly, you must be strategic in sifting through the mounds of information available to find the research most aligned with your area of interest.
  • Researcher Bias: If you are reviewing qualitative research, you need to assess the problem statement/question to ensure it is free from bias, as it can impact the quality and accuracy of the research.
  • Outdated Studies: Research changes over time, and newer studies can unveil evidence that may contradict/build upon previous research. If you don’t carefully review the dates of the studies, you risk implementing outdated practices.
  • Various Research Methods: Consumers need to be aware of the research methods and populations studied to determine whether the practices identified within the research will benefit their interests. For example, suppose an elementary school counselor is searching for evidence-based SEL programs to implement at their school. In that case, they need to ensure the research and evidence of effectiveness is with elementary-aged children, as opposed to only with middle school or high school students.

Overall, the biggest challenge when reviewing research and interpreting evidence-based practices is being able to evaluate the literature to determine credibility, quality, relevancy, and accuracy.

How would the evidence-based strategies you select guide your foundational knowledge within your profession?

The evidence-based strategies I select will guide me by ensuring I’m implementing best practices as a school counselor. These strategies will allow me to make well-informed decisions, build on my foundational knowledge, strengthen my skill set, and, most importantly, provide competent guidance to students. Utilizing evidence-based strategies will also promote better outcomes for students as the strategies have already demonstrated effectiveness.

Did your literature review give you the foundational knowledge to implement practices and strategies in research and program evaluation?

After reading through the criteria for evaluating the review of literature, I have a stronger understanding and more clarity on how to assess the quality of research and synthesize the findings within the studies to select evidence-based approaches. By using the criteria established by McMillan (2016), I feel I will be more equipped as a consumer to critically analyze and interpret research, enhancing my ability as a school counselor to provide the best support to my students.

Response 2- Tanya

There can be several challenges with reviewing research and interpreting evidence-based practices. Some of those challenges according to McMillan (2016) not all studies are from a credible source. Some may have methodological flaws, biases, or raise ethical concerns. In addition, with the amount of findings available one must ensure to find a study that is most aligned with their subject. What works in one context may not be applicable in another. It’s also important to be aware of the rapid change of evidence and how scientific knowledge is always evolving. When reviewing research we should always consider the validity, quality, and accuracy of the literature.

Selecting evidence-based strategies can guide our foundational knowledge within the profession by providing us with a framework for decision-making. We can enhance the quality of our work and achieve better outcomes by incorporating evidence-based strategies. These strategies are often rooted in rigorous research and when critically evaluated, they can demonstrate effectiveness when applied to specific contexts. It can help us be better in our profession and ensure we are doing the best in promoting better outcomes for our students.

Reviewing the literature gave me insight in the foundational knowledge needed to implement practices and strategies in research and program evaluation. I learned the steps needed to review literature and the purpose of it. While I still have a lot to learn I am more confident in what to look for when interpreting evidence-based practices and reviewing research.
