Must Read Everything:

Reply to at least two classmate’s posts, applying the RISE Model for Meaningful Feedback

I will also show an example below of how the response needs to be addressed.

Here’s an example of how the response should look. Please don’t copy it.

The response to the classmate need to be just like this.

Example Response (Response Needs to be writen just like the response below No copying)

RISE Feedback:

REFLECT: I concur with “Action plans should reflect the type of services that are needed and have an idea of the expected outcome of the services” because it is in line with Hatch and Hartline’s intentional school counseling guidelines in regards to determining students needs.

INQUIRE: Can you further explain what “closing-the-gap action plans” are?

SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts.

ELEVATE: What if you re-purposed “For example, after a needs assessment, the school is having problems with bullying” as “Following Trish Hatch’s MTMDSS tier based interventions, if the school is having problems with bullying, after a needs assessment, we could… citation…”  for a more weighted argument?

Response 1 Bianca- As a School Counselor, how do ensure effective short-term individual counseling?

As a School Counselor we have to ensure that the goals that are set for short-term individual counseling are goals that can be achieved in a short term. We can’t set them up for failure by doing goals that will take longer, because we already know that they will only be working on this goal for a short term. For example, we are working with 8th grade students right now that have low grades right now. The quarter is about to end and we are helping all the students that have any D or F meet every other day to check in make sure that they are turning in their work and anything else that they might need. This is a short term since the term is about finish and the students just need that extra support and that extra motivation so that they can get their grades up. They need a reminder constantly so that they know if they don’t push through right now they might not be able to walk the line with their friends and their families attend the graduation ceremony as well. For the most part it is working with the students, but like everything you get those students that no matter how much support you offer them they still not take advantage of that.

Response 2- Jaime

As a School Counselor, how do ensure effective short-term individual counseling?

Too many times when counseling students we set stipulations like we will run a 4-week group or will pull a student out of class once a week for the next month and see if that helps behavior. Instead of putting stipulations on counseling we need to start setting goals such as learn strategies to become a better reader this allows students the amount of time, they need to hit the goal not say in a month you need to be a better reader. According to confident counselors, “I take a big, specific goal (e.g., learning to handle disappointment without getting really angry), and breaks that into smaller skills. What does this student have to be able to do to learn how to handle that situation on their own?” This is helpful because it allows students to break down there needs and tackle them one step at a time. Having an agenda is also helpful to allow short term counseling to be effective. Have students check in, focus on the exercise and be a part of the activity. School counselors need to focus comprehensively on academic, social-emotional, and postsecondary domains in addition to being preventative and using data to better target student needs. When in doubt if a student needs more refer them out.
