Read the ethical vignette in the attached document carefully. Once you have read and analyzed the vignette, use the 3 multicultural competencies and cultural conflict resolution strategies that were discussed in class to determine if the therapist’s behavior was ethical or not. Explain your answer in one, typewritten, double spaced, 12-point font paragraph.
Maurice is a psychoanalytically trained therapist who places great emphasis on the importance of individuation and separation of the late adolescent from parents. Ling, a 19-year-old, comes to him because of depression and family conflict. Ling is an electrician’s apprentice. His parents, who immigrated from China many years ago, are owners of a large accounting firm. They always expected Ling to take over the business. Instead, Ling dropped out of college and chose a career as an electrician. Ling loves his work but he is troubled by his family’s reaction to his choice. Ling enters counseling when he is at the point of acquiescing to his parents’ plans for him and returning to college. Maurice decides such a reversal would be counterproductive for Ling. He asks Ling to consider moving out of his parents’ home to give himself time to objectively consider his options. Ling reluctantly agrees.
Ethical Practice in a Multicultural Society
Changes in US Population
! American society has never been culturally uniform, but recent and projected changes in population will make it truly diverse. By the year 2050, ethnic groups previously considered minorities will outnumber the rest of the US population
Cultural Competence in Mental Health
! The current versions of the codes of ethics place substantial emphasis on multicultural issues and under several standards
o Example: ACA Code of Ethics, Section B – Confidentiality, Privileged Communication and Privacy, B.1. Respecting Client Rights, B.1.a. Multicultural Diversity Considerations – “Counselors maintain awareness and sensitivity regarding cultural meanings of confidentiality and privacy. Counselors respect differing views towards disclosure of information.”
- ! Commitment to principles of equality and justice is needed to practice. Along with the desire to be fair and accessible, one must have specific competencies in multicultural counseling to achieve that goal
- ! The Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD) has developed a series of multicultural competencies based on 3 basic principles:
! Counselor Awareness of Own Cultural Values and Biases ! Counselor Awareness of Client’s Worldview
! Culturally Appropriate Intervention Strategies
Within these competencies, professionals develop Attitudes and Beliefs, Knowledge, and Skills
!Counselor Awareness of Own Cultural Values and Biases
“ Attitudes & Beliefs: Cultural self-awareness & sensitivity to one’s own culture, aware of own cultural influences and biases, recognize their limits, recognize their sources of discomfort
- ” Knowledge: About own race and culture and its effects on definitions and biases of normality/abnormality, understand how racism, discrimination, and stereotyping personally affects them, social impact upon others
- ” Skills: Seek educational, consultative, and training experiences to improve understanding and effectiveness with culturally different populations, recognize limits of their competencies, seek consultation, further training or education, refer out to more qualified resources
!Counselor Awareness of Client’s Worldview
- ” Attitudes and Beliefs: Aware of negative & positive emotional reactions toward other ethnic groups, contrast own beliefs and attitudes with different ones respectfully, aware of own bias/stereotypes toward other ethnic groups
- ” Knowledge: About particular groups they work with, aware of life experiences, cultural heritage, and historical background of client, understand effects of culture on personality formation, psychological disorders, etc., about sociopolitical influences (i.e. immigration issues, poverty, racism, stereotyping)
- ” Skills: Relevant research and findings regarding mental health affecting various ethnic and racial groups, seek educational experiences, actively involved with minority individuals outside the counseling setting
!Culturally Appropriate Intervention Strategies
- ” Beliefs and Attitudes: Respect clients’ religious and/ or spiritual beliefs,
indigenous helping practices, value bilingualism
- ” Knowledge: Understand the generic characteristics of counseling and therapy, aware of institutional barriers preventing use of mental health services, potential bias in assessment instruments & interpret findings keeping cultural and linguistic characteristics, aware of discriminatory practices at the social & community level
- ” Skills: Engage in verbal & nonverbal helping responses, use many methods or approaches, seek consultation with traditional healers and spiritual leaders, interact in language requested by the client, work to eliminate biases, prejudices, and discriminatory contexts in evaluations & interventions
Conflict Resolution and Culture
! In working with diverse populations, practitioners will confront dilemmas that involve conflicts about deep personal values and beliefs. This makes them exceptionally difficult to resolve. Resolving these conflicts may include the following steps:
“ Act cautiously
“ Seek consultation from those more knowledgeable about the client’s culture “ Refer to the abundant literature on responsible multicultural counseling and
therapy
