Guidance
The task is to write a report explaining how a specific Fintech firm, product or business model should be regulated and evaluating the potential impact of regulation on that firm/product/business model.
IT IS REQUIRED TO CHOOSE A FIRM/PRODUCT/BUSINESS MODEL YOU WANT TO STUDY WHICH IS SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE MODULE CONVENOR.
THIS MEANS I WOULD REQUIRE YOU TO SUBMIT THE FINTECH FIRM/PRODUCT/BUSINESS MODEL OF CHOICE SO I CAN HAVE IT APPROVED BEFORE YOU GET STARTED ON THE PROJECT
I believe if I get this information from you within the next 7 days, I can have it approved in another 7 days or less which leaves you about 2 weeks or morw to complete the project. I hope this is fine?
Please see the briefing document attached for full question and instructions. VERY IMPORTANT.
The report should include:
• A concise summary of the firm/product/business model,
focusing on any elements that might be of particular
interest to regulators
• An analysis of why this firm/product/business model should
be regulated, engaging with the different theories of and
rationales for regulation
• Discussion of how this firm/product/business model will be
regulated under a relevant regulatory regime (e.g. that of the UK), in terms of the structure and approach adopted by that regulatory authority
• An evaluation of the likely impact of the appropriate regulation on the firm/product/business model and whether that regulation is appropriate (is it too restrictive or too lax)
The report should be structured and divided into different sections. There is no set structure but your report should engage with all the points mentioned above in a way that is clear but also highlights any linkages between these points.
It should be supported by appropriate references to academic literature, practitioner or official publications, industry or news stories, using the Harvard style of citation (see below).
1. Apply academic theories about the rationales and structures of regulation to justify the practical proposals made in your report
2. Select a structure that is clear and logical, develops your argument and flows smoothly
3. Make sure that you have cited your sources in the prescribed Harvard-style format
The report will demonstrate the student’s command of the following module learning outcomes: 1. Understand the fundamental rationales for regulation, regulatory structures and approaches in order to appreciate how and why these apply to different financial technologies
2. Appreciate the interaction between regulation and innovation in finance, including the potential for regulation to encourage or discourage new technologies, or how new Fintech products can support compliance with regulation (‘RegTech’)
5. Demonstrate command of the above by applying them to a practical case study
Depending on the case study chosen, students may also demonstrate their command of one or both of the following:
3. Evaluate the issues with the collection and management of user data, both in terms of monetisation, the GDPR and cyber-security
4. Understand the significance of culture in promoting good conduct and cyber-security
