For example, I would not accept an essay on Huckleberry Finn or “How It Feels to Be Colored Me,” but I would be happy to see you write about “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” or Their Eyes Were Watching God.
You will need to have me approve your topic before you begin. Ideally, you will write about something I have read and will therefore be able to evaluate along with you. Your author or work may be quite recent, so long as sufficient published criticism exists to make research feasible.
Follow MLA guidelines for your essay. If you are not familiar with MLA guidelines, the Reference Desk at almost any library will have them, or you may purchase a copy of the latest version at the bookstore or online book seller of your choice. Do make sure your copy is current.
Citing online research is tricky. Make certain to print everything concerning any online source you plan to use. It may not be available or easy to find later.
Your essay must include at least one print source in addition to the primary text. I do expect you to demonstrate skill in using a traditional bricks and mortar library as part of the project. Your total number of sources (online and print) must be at least three, excluding the primary text.
While English 2130 is a sophomore level course and I do not obsess over the minutiae of the apostrophe or the spelling of Latin phrases, I do consider appropriate grammar and usage to be an important component in collegiate work. No essay with two or more sentence fragments, comma splices, fused sentences, or subject-verb agreement errors in any combination will receive a grade higher than B. No essay with four or more such errors will receive a grade higher than C.
