RHETORICAL ANALYSIS of INTERNET COMMUNICATION – National Telecommunications and Information Administration

Please begin by identifying a complex instance of persuasive communication that depends, in part, on the features of the Internet in order to persuade. You might, for example, choose a political website that promotes a high level of interaction between supporters of a particular position or candidate. You might review the activities of a Reddit subreddit dedicated to promoting action on a particular issue. You might review interactions within a community or affinity group (though only the open and public portions of such groups). Or you might review the website of a group devoted to changing public perceptions about the Internet and related public policy matters (a few examples are the Electronic Frontier FoundationLinks to an external site., the Electronic Privacy Information CenterLinks to an external site., the RIAALinks to an external site., the MPAALinks to an external site., and Creative CommonsLinks to an external site.). In short, I’m asking you to locate an example of people working to effect change via the Internet.

Once you’ve selected your Internet-based communication, examine it using recognized tools for rhetorical analysis. Among these tools are: the Aristotelian appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos); the four questions or stases at the heart of Hermagoras’ Stasis Theory; and focused audience analysis developed as a by-product of working to understand the elements underpinning the rhetorical situation as outlined by Lloyd Bitzer (exigence/audience/constraints). Please DO NOT CITE Keith and Lundberg’s Essential Guide to Rhetoric as your source for the rhetorical tools you select for your argument. It is an introductory textbook. You are advanced scholars. Advanced scholars invest research time in understanding how tools operate and have been employed by others (or going back to the source itself and understanding the tool in its original context) and having invested that time, they don’t need to cite introductory textbooks.
Using these tools, develop a sustained critical argument in which you determine whether your chosen site is successful in appealing to its intended audience(s) or not. Be sure to support your argument with illustrative examples drawn from your site, and to select representative persuasive efforts for focused analysis. This means quoting from the site, and because the Internet is such a visual medium, will likely mean bringing screenshots of images and text into your own project. You are expected to quote frequently and to analyze, interpret, critique and/or explain the likely or intended persuasive effect of the quoted material.
Please shoot for at least 1,600 words, exclusive of bibliographical/works cited materials.
