Overview: Your project is to investigate the consequences of the rise of right-wing populism and its linkage to democratic erosion. You will be focusing on one region in particular – Europe – where there are lots of cases and a great deal of popular and academic contestation and discussion of its consequences.
You must discuss at least two concrete examples of right populist electoral outcomes in Europe (to clarify, by “two concrete examples” this is outcomes in two different countries).
You must cite at least three peer-reviewed journal articles and/or books (or chapters from books) from academic presses – this does not include academic encyclopedias/reference works. These must be in addition to any course resources you use.
Note: you are welcome to use reporting on parties that is not in English only so long as you can translate the materials yourself or official translations are provided
Focus on Victor Orban in Hungary-the Fidesz Party. Anti-Immigrant
Marine Le Pen- National Rally Party in France. Anti-European Union
Can also look up the True Finn party in Finland and other nationalist parties who feel that their culture is
under attack by immigrants and the European Union.
Can look at Brexit and how far right groups also played in a role in Britain leaving the European Union.
This list gives you a start. Formulate an argument and go between the leaders and parties on how each
has taken away democratic rights. You’ll have to research specific examples for each. Orban in Hungary
would be a good start.
