a. Introduction – thesis and preview of paper (about ½ page)
i. Ex: “I will analyze Eminem’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ using Feminist
Rhetorical Criticism. First, I’ll lit review. Second, methods. Third,
analyze. Finally, conclusion.”
b. Lit Review – summarize the literature about the GENERAL topic (about ½ – 1
page).
i. In the Eminem paper, notice that the lit review says NOTHING about
Eminem. The lit review is about domestic violence.
ii. Remember: This is NOT one source summary after the next. DO NOT DO
THE FOLLOWING: “First, I read this book…Then I read this article that
said…Then I read a journal…”
iii. Use about 2-3 sources here.
c. Theory/Method (about ½ to 1 page)
i. Tell us what theory, lens, or framework you are going to use to look at the
text.
ii. “This video has interesting representations of gender. So, I’m going to use
Feminist Rhetorical Criticism. FRC is defined as
_________________________________ (source).”
ii. “This speech has interesting themes about myths so I’m going to use
Fantasy Theme Analysis. FTA says that _________________ (source).”
iv. Use 1-2 sources to briefly define your theory.
v. You can use the textbook (cite it correctly!). And find an additional source
via a library book and/or journal article.
d. Analysis (2-3 pages)
i. What are the 2-4 themes you found?
ii. See the 3 different sections in the Eminem paper.
iii. Make a claim, then support with evidence from the text you are looking at.
1. Ex. “Women ask to be abuse” (claim)
2. Ex. “Megan Fox punched him first” (support)
iv. DO NOT give me giant quotes from the text or pages of song lyrics! I can
read! Notice in the Eminem paper, I only quote a couple of lines from the
lyrics. Summarize and explain the text. Don’t give long quotes!
v. Note: You may not have any citations here.
e. Conclusion (at LEAST 1 page)
i. This is your time to have an opinion!
ii. What does this text do? What did it do? What can it do?
iii. Is this text good or bad? Is it good with some things, but bad with other?
iv. Recommendations for future research.
