Sampling Designs for Qualitative Studies Discussion & Qualitative Data Collection (Fieldwork and Observation) Discussion

Discussion Post 1:

In this discussion, you will evaluate various sampling designs for qualitative research studies. You will then apply some of these qualitative sampling designs to research studies in health administration. Please respond to the following items:

What sampling options are available to researchers when they design their qualitative studies? Create a table to summarize the available sampling design options. Discuss three qualitative sampling designs that are particularly applicable to health administration research.

Identify one qualitative sampling design that is appropriate for answering the research questions of your proposed qualitative study. Describe how you will design your study sample. Discuss potential challenges that you may encounter in the sampling process.

For this discussion:

  • Initial post: 350-400 words, due on Wednesday at 11:59pm (AZ)
  • 2 response posts: 200-250 words each
  • Cite at least 2 peer-reviewed journal articles

Discussion Post 2:
This discussion focuses on collecting qualitative data through fieldwork and observations. Data collection is a critical component of your research plan due in Module 10, and will be a major part of your DHA dissertation.

For this discussion, consider a health-administration related setting that is appropriate for this week’s fieldwork and observation. Recommended settings would include the pharmacy area inside a CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid store; the waiting area of a dentist’s office, an urgent care facility, or a physician’s office; or any accessible area inside a public hospital.

Regardless the setting that you choose to observe, be sure to follow all applicable rules, regulations, or laws. Public settings work best for this exercise since you are not required to get permission to be present. Under no circumstances should you audio or video record the participants, because this action will circumvent the need for IRB approval and any privacy laws that may be in effect at your chosen location.

Complete the fieldwork and observation at the beginning of this week. After you arrive at your chosen location, quietly observe the setting for 10-15 minutes. Take your raw field notes in a tabular form to chronicle occurrences (peoples’ actions, unique situations, etc.) in the setting every 2-3 minutes. Maintaining such field notes is important because in a DHA dissertation these notes will be presented as an appendix.

After the fieldwork and observation conclude, each student will scan or take a photo copy of the raw field notes, then type the raw notes to an organized report. For your initial post to the discussion, provide a brief description of the setting you observed and your overall impression of the observation process. Also, attach your raw notes and the typed report to the initial post. (This is a necessary step because maintaining reports is important part of the data analysis process in qualitative research and for a DHA dissertation.)

Respond to the initial posts of at least two peers. Comment on each peer’s setting choice and observation process. Discuss what you have learned from each typed report.

In addition, discuss other fieldwork and observation methods that qualitative researchers use to collect data. Explain whether you will use the fieldwork and observation method to collect data for your proposed qualitative study.

For this discussion:

  • Initial post: 350-400 words (excluding the raw field notes and typed report), due on Wednesday at 11:59pm (AZ)
  • 2 response posts: 200-250 words each
  • Cite at least 2 peer-reviewed journal articles
***For discussion post 2, you can make the setting at a military hospital. I am on active duty orders.*****
