ASSAULTIVE BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
Scenario One-B
You respond to a CODE ASSISTANCE at the locked adult behavioral unit. When you arrive, you see an older male, throwing chairs violently against the day room wall. Several staff members stand ready to physically intervene as several more individuals that you don’t know, stand nearby and might be in jeopardy. After throwing the chairs against the wall, the patient yells loudly and threateningly at the staff and other individuals standing close by, telling them that they can’t keep him here and that he will get out if he has to hurt someone, then runs to his room. The nurse in charge is trying unsuccessfully to reach the doctor for what might be orders for this patient as the other staff stand, ready to stop the patient from his violent behavior. The patient emerges from his room, clearly agitated as the individuals in the dayroom try to stop him from getting to the door, but the patient shoves them forcefully and the staff attempt to grab him as well, but this only agitates the patient further as he yells, swinging his suitcase threateningly at them before rushing toward the door in what appears to be an attempt to AWOL. The patient pounds his fist and kicks the door hard, screaming and demanding that he be allowed to leave as the staff members try to pull him away from the door, but the patient only yells louder and knocks them away with his suitcase before running around the room, yelling and waving the suitcase around to keep everyone away.
What intervention would you recommend?
