School-Based Training for Establishing and Maintaining the Therapeutic Working Alliance with Children and Adolescents

  1. This project will be based on High School Students who struggle with “fear of failure“, which affects them emotionally, socially and academically. 
  2. Describe the population chosen and how it affects them. 
  3. Use the Psychodynamic theory to frame that content of the training program.
  4. Introduce the “culture of childhood” and culture of adolescence,” marking the relevance for your topic and population.
  5. Describe the characteristics of culture (see above) and the implications of these “cultures” for responding to the developmental needs of students in an academic setting.
  6. Identify the characteristics, risk factors, and warning signs of students at risk for mental health and behavioral disorders, such as the one you selected, and contrast these with developmental markers (i.e., how can we know when a behavior is developmentally appropriate for this age?) 
    1. Create a list of developmental aberrations that school personnel might need to be educated on for the case you’re addressing.

  7. Identify the signs and symptoms of substance abuse for your student, as well as the signs and symptoms of living in a home where substance use occurs.
  8. Describe two intervention strategies (these take place over time) to promote academic development with your student that address barriers to academic development and promote success
  9. Describe two techniques (these are brief, in-the-moment strategies) for personal and social counseling in school settings for your student.

  10. Skills to critically examine the connections between social, familial, emotional, and behavioral problems and academic achievement
  11. Identify school counselor roles in consultation with the following stakeholders: 
    1. families
    2. school personnel
    3. community agencies
  12. Common medications that affect learning, behavior, and mood in children and adolescents 
    1. Using the clinical chapters in the text, identify a common medication that a student might be taking and discuss the following 
      1. treatment indications
      2. potential side effects
      3. contraindications (when the meds should not be used and with what)
