Directions:
There are many crucial events happening right now in the United States. It is your job as an AP Government student to be aware of current events and how they affect how the United States functions. Here is what you need to do:
You must find a current event that has to do with American politics, and you have to apply it to something we have learned in class.
You must do the following things in your project:
Choose a current event (anything that has happened within the last 20 years) that has to do with politics within the United States (such as, but not limited to, Supreme Court cases, political figures, presidents, political scandals, interpretations of the Constitution, anything you may feel was an injustice to a certain group of people, etc.)
Describe in detail what has happened within your current event (i.e. the historical context/implications of this event)
Find two Supreme Court cases that we have learned in class that support/refute your current event
Describe how your current event ties into a constitutional amendment or something within the United States Constitution (i.e. the Necessary and Proper Clause, federalism, etc.)
Argue what you believe should be done about your current event
What is the United States doing about your current event?
Do you think that the United States government is doing a good job at handling this particular current event? Why or why not?
Why do you think that this current event has had such a monumental impact on the United States?
Explain what you believe will be done about the current event in the future
For each of these questions, you have to find an online or physical source that ties into your reasoning/points. These are not limited to: newspaper articles, TV shows or documentaries, news reports, books, web sources, etc.
For example, if you chose Roe v. Wade as a current event, you will have to describe the history behind the Supreme Court case, as well as why it has become so important in today’s world.
Essay Requirements:
Your essay must contain:
At least 8 pages of information (excluding your bibliography)
A clearly defined thesis statement
Citations (all sources must be cited in MLA format)
12 pt. Times New Roman font
Double spaced lines
Your name and page number on the top right hand corner of your paper (will be further explained in class)
