After reading the NPR article, the Wall Street Journal Articles, and the piece by a former Administration Official, Mr. Robert Chesney, pick a side of the encryption debate.
In no less than 2 pages and no more than 3 pages, double spaced, select one side of this debate and justify why you have chosen that particular side of this argument going forward. Be sure to incorporate information from the required reading, but also think about the larger picture of what this may mean for future trends, precedents, and government practices.
You do not have to answer each one of the following questions, these are merely designed to help jumpstart your brain in an effort for you to tease out your own argument either for or against encryption and the actions of the Department of Justice and the FBI.
Has the government acted in full faith to the existing laws regarding privacy and pursuit of criminal acts? Does the fundamental “letter of the law” match the intent or “spirit” of the law?
Do you think what the government did was in line with civil liberty protections and the protections afforded American citizens under the Constitution?
Are you concerned at all that the FBI’s circumvention of this technology through an ‘outside party’ is a dangerous precedent? Where might this go in the future?
