Session: The Stranger in the Lifeboat: The Power of What You Carry Through Life & Other Important Lessons

” re write in your own words I dont need a cover page” The third general session was “The Stranger in the Lifeboat: The Power of What You Carry Through Life & Other Important Lessons” with Mitch Albom. Throughout this session Mitch shared with the audience his experiences with two individuals, how they majorly impacted his life and how the reality of what you need is not often what you desire. He opens the session speaking of the story of a man claiming to be Jesus who was rescued by a lifeboat from the waters of a ship wreckage. The other occupants doubt the man and go through much confusion, doubting both the man’s authenticity and logic. He draws examples to in his life, his rekindling of his relationship to his ailing college professor. He found himself doubting the man how his role model could so easy to forgive others and be selfless even during his dying days. He brings to question how often we ask others for help and that by helping others it can help ourselves feel better about ourselves. As someone working in HR, this stood out to me as I often feel the best about myself when I able able to provide services for others. He also asked the question of “When we ask for help, how open are we to the real help that you need?” Throughout this session a common theme I found was that as HR professionals helping others, we must be flexible in how we both receive and extend our services. Mitch also spoke about how he took on the impossible task of finding medical care for a terminally ill orphan who later became his daughter. Both he and his wife had tried for children and later found themselves with such a vivacious little girl through circumstances they couldn’t have possibly anticipated. He stressed the importance of these human connections and taking advantage of the time spent with others while you have it. He made an excellent point about how we cannot expect help to happen right away, we must take accountability for what we have control over and do the best with what we are given. His story of two incredible people, his coach and his child, who influenced his life to be able to take advantage of what little time he did have, is incredibly touching and highlights the importance of human connection. As HR professionals we must advocate for what is important and most meaningful to employees and strive to build human connections in business. We are advocates and by doing meaningful things it connects us to others and our team. In our role we are given resources that may not be enough to fix a problem, but we need to restructure and do the best we can to do the most good. He also brought up how people are inherently selfish and blame others, but as HR we must break that mold and take accountability while helping others to take accountability as well. He said that sharing kindness and giving help is how you make a difference after death. Our job as human resources is to provide help to companies and employees.
