Sociology and Violence: The Politics of Collective Violence. & Weber “Politics as a Vocation”.

Instructions:

  1. Think of one specific case of violence (could be a particular event or a type of violence; for instance, the current clashes between protesters and police in France, or domestic violence against women in the US) and reflect on how Collins’ theory may be applied to interrogate, analyze, and understand it.
  2. Pose 1 to 3 sociological questions about this phenomenon that could be answered through Collins’ theory. For instance: in the context of France, what interactions between protesters and police are the turning point into violent confrontation? For the case of domestic

violence, we could ask: why in some cases the usual victim of domestic violence ends up                   killing the aggressor?

  1. Address those questions using three key ideas or concepts from the two reading materials assigned for this week and explain what each key idea or concept could illuminate about the phenomenon you selected. (For obvious reasons, I won’t answer the previous

             questions…)

  1. No need to do research into the selected topic to answer the questions. I am

asking you to speculate on the factors that may be relevant according to this theory,

even if  you know very little about the empirical phenomenon you selected.
