In this assignment, students will provide a one-page summary of the chosen primary research article. The
summary must include (1) a complete citation for the literature article, (2) an explanation of the relevance
of the research subject, (3) the purpose/central hypothesis of the investigation, (4) the experimental
approach, (5) the most important results, (6) the major conclusion(s) and future directions. Students are
free to organize their summaries in any way they wish; there are no specific guidelines for ordering or
organizing the summary. Students should carefully consider the following questions when composing the
summary:
• What is the subject of the research and why is it important/relevant?
• What is the primary goal or hypothesis motivating this investigation and what was the prior work
that lead to the current study?
• What experimental approaches were used in this research and why were they used?
• What were the most important results and findings and what makes them important?
• How did these results lead to specific conclusions and what impact do these conclusions have on
the field?
• What are some potential future studies that could follow up on the current study?
