Students will keep a personal log documenting the hours of observations. The log will be submitted to the instructor and only needs to include date, location, grade, subject, and length of time (if you use videos or tutoring simply include as much of this identifying data as you can). Ideally, (but not required) at least three of the total hours should be in a special education/inclusion setting.

*Note you will have to make up observation logs for this assignment, as I have not completed any observation hours. If you make up a school, please use a school that is from Northern New Jersey.
(NOTE: You will submit through TK20 and in BlackBoard Assignments )
Critical Details/Directions
Reminder, you may accumulate the total observation hours with any combination of tutoring, observing online videos of classroom teaching, observations of teachers in person, small group instruction, etc.- basically anything involving children and learning… If you are teaching or observing online, that is fine to observe as well
Ideally, the observations should be of the area/age you would like to teach and include special education or inclusion classrooms, but they do not have to be. The schools/environments can be private or public.
Especially now, many or all of your hours may be watching videos of teaching online. That is perfectly fine. You may get creative and use YouTube, https://www.teachertube.com/, http://www.teachersnetwork.org/ or any other online video source to find observable content. And remember, it does not have to be a regular classroom, it can be a tutoring session, skill building workshop, test prep, etc.
Below are the exact steps for this requirement:
1. Do the observations so you get to a total of 25 hours of observations. The total refers to the combined total duration times of the class, video observations. So if I watched 12 two hour videos of math teaching and one hour long video of a math tutoring session, the total would be 25 hours.
2. Create a written log documenting your observations. The log should include the following information:
(Note: The specific format is up to you as long as it includes the data below)
-A. Date (The date you completed the observation. If it is an online video it is the date you viewed the video, not necessarily when the video was filmed).
-B. Subject/Grade level (Do your best to identify the topic/subject being taught (eg. Math, Algebra, Science, Biology, Reading Test prep etc. and the grade or age of the students. If you are not sure or it is not stated, do your best to estimate.)
-C. Duration (The length of the video or class or learning environment. You may round up/down to the nearest 5 minute interval. For example, if the video was 47 minutes, I can round it up to 50 minutes, or you can use the exact time length, the choice is yours.)
D. Location/Website address (If the observation was in person, this is the place and location. For example, “Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Teaneck, NJ”. If it is a video, then include the website- eg. www.betterschools.org//54636. It is okay of you don’t have extensive information here, just include what you can access/identify.
As you can see, you have a good deal of freedom. As long as you document the total number of hours in a way that is clear and sensible, that is all that matters.
Example of portion of Observation Log:
Observation 1:
A. Date: October 8, 2020
B. Subject/Grade level: 7th grade English/Language Arts
C. Duration: 50 minutes.
D. Location/Website address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
Observation 2:
A. Date: October 9, 2020
B. Subject/Grade level: 9th grade English/Language Arts
C. Duration: 1hr 10 minutes.
D. Location/Website address: https://www.youtube.com/7867 Students will keep a personal log documenting the hours of observations.
