Here is the TOPIC for the research paper: 7. AAE (African American English) or AAVE (African American Vernacular English) This dialect is spoken primarily by Black Americans, and this topic overlaps with topic 3, since many speakers of AAE and AAVE code switch. Teachers are expected to teach SAE (Standard American English), but many teachers do not want to shame their students who speak AAE or AAVE. Since language is entwined with culture, correcting a child’s writing or speech in specific ways might be perceived by the child and the child’s family as an attack on their culture. How can teachers at the K-12 level teach “proper” English and “correct” grammar while at the same time respecting linguistic differences among their students?7. Traditional Grammar Research Paper Specifics

Times New Roman or similar academic style font, 12-point size
Align left (flush left margin with an uneven right margin) & double spaced text throughout
Use either MLA or APA style but whichever one you choose, please be consistent. For example, APA requires an abstract, so if you choose to use APA, please include that and any other elements that this style sheet normally requires.
Use an appropriate number of sources. A good guide is to about the same number of sources as your paper has pages. So, an 8-page paper should have around 8 sources. You want to make sure to have a good ratio of your own writing to source content, and this correlation between pages in the paper and number of sources seems to strike the right balance of student writing to the source material.
Make sure that ¾ of your sources are scholarly sources. Of the non-scholarly sources, make sure that they are credible. Avoid commercial and click-bait websites. You can always ask me at any time my views on what sources are appropriate, but it seems after the Annotated Bibliography assignment that everyone is getting on board with this concept already.
This paper should be a thesis-driven essay that is supported by research. It is not, therefore, a report or a survey of the literature on a particular topic. That said, part of your paper probably will provide an overview of your subject, and that’s fine, but remember that your research paper should have a thesis statement (a one-sentence expression of what it is your paper is attempting to prove).
The matching text percentage generated by Turnitin.com should be no more than 15%. You will see the matching percentage after turning in the paper on Canvas after which you could resubmit if the percentage is too high. Now, this 15% figure will apply only to the DRAFT because once the FINAL version of the paper is uploaded into Canvas, Turnitin will “recognize” that match between the final and draft versions, making the matching number super high. As an instructor, I use Turnitin to make sure that students are not actually plagiarizing material, which I am not worried about happening in a 2000-level course, although anything is possible, and to see how much of their paper consists of quoted material. It is best to quote sparingly, and to avoid long quotes, particularly in a paper as short as this one, which granted may not feel all that short to some of you.
In terms of citing sources, remember that you must cite a source even if you are paraphrasing or summarizing it. Quotes, summaries, and paraphrases all should be treated the same which is to say, lead into them with signal phrases, unpack or explain them afterward, and of course, provide an in-text citation.
Anytime you use three or more consecutive words from a source verbatim, you must quote. Three or more consecutive words copied from a source without attribution is considered plagiarism. (Other profs’ definitions of plagiarism may vary from this one, so it never hurts to ask).
