In this paper, you are required to select a film (a popular film, not a documentary) that must be approved by me before you begin the project. Your paper will consist of two parts:
1) an annotated bibliography of 3 scholarly sources that supports your research question or statement. The articles should not be about the film. Rather, they need to provide scholarly support for your research to legitimize your project.
2) a discussion of thematic analysis or character development in the film which focuses on the manifestations, portrayals, and performances of deviance and/or normative behavior.
Step 1: Select a Topic to Compliment your film
Review the textbook topics and chapters and select one that interests you. To find a film, you can use the IMDB and type in keywords such as: mental health, suicide, deviance, crime, poverty, etc. Your search should yield a generous list of appropriate films. To pick a topic for the traditional assignment, see my list above for inspiration.
Step 2: Select Articles
You need to find 3 articles. All articles must be scholarly—no exceptions!
To gain access to the library’s website and remote databases.
Be sure to click peer reviewed or scholarly when searching for articles. I will provide tutorials and workshops for this and other steps.
Step 3: Create a Research Question or Statement
Create a question or a statement based on the articles that you select. The statement should relate to the theme of deviance in your selected film.
Step 4: Write an Annotated Bibliography Using Your Selected Articles
Annotated Bibliography
As stated above you will need to include an annotated bibliography, which is a detailed description of each of your selected scholarly sources. Please see the sample annotation below for more information.
To do an annotated bibliography, you must answer all of the following questions as you summarize each of the four articles: (You must read the articles to answer these questions. Do no rely on the abstracts for the answers. You cannot skip any of these questions!)
1-What are the main arguments? Be detailed and discuss the author’s purpose for conducting the research.
2-What is the point of this book or article? What is the key question/concept in the mind of the author?
3-What are the conclusions in the article?
4-How did the researcher collect the information (methodology)? Did the researcher conduct interviews, review literature, or create surveys?
5-What are some of the weaknesses of the study? Do not use this question to discuss your personal thoughts about the author’s research. Read the article’s conclusion, summary, or discussion section to find out what the limitations of the study were?
6-What suggestions does the author make for future research? (this is an important question, be sure to address it!)

Step 5: Analyze the Film and Summarize the Articles
In this section, you’ll need to discuss the thematic or character development in the film which
focuses on the manifestations, portrayals, and performances of deviance and/or normative
behavior. You should identify consistent (or inconsistent) themes within the film and the articles
throughout this section.
In this section, you will want to respond to most of the following questions while trying to connect the articles to the film:
-Select a character or group of individuals who exemplify conventional (law-abiding) society. What do they do that is considered conventional? Do they judge, condemn, or label the deviance character?
-Select a character in the film and explain how he or she exemplifies formal or informal deviance. Discuss the deviance that the character commits.
-What does the literature say about the type of deviance that is showcased in your selected film?
-Is there consistency between the scholarly literature and the way the main character or deviant character acts, is treated, and feels about his or her behavior?
-Identify a theory or category (positivism or constructionism) that best explains the deviance featured in the film and discuss it in detail.
-What are the consequences for the deviant behavior? (e.g. is the deviant punished, ostracized, killed, jailed, etc.?)
-How does the film end?
