Term paper comparing and contrasting individual and group counseling models; Teyber and Yalom

  • This assignment will compare interpersonal process individual counseling models to existential group therapy; i.e., the differences and similarities of individual and group therapy regarding process. Your paper will be composed of a title page, 6 pages of running text, and a references page all formatted in APA 7th edition style.
  • Corey, G. (1991). Theory and practice of counseling and psychotherapy, 4th ed. Pacific Grove, CA, Brooks/Cole.
Teyber, E. (2000). Interpersonal process in psychotherapy: A relational approach, 4th ed., Pacific Grove, CA, Brooks/Cole.
Yalom, I.D. (1995). The theory and practice of group psychotherapy, 4th ed., New York, Basic Books. If you have a different edition, and that is fine, just look for the appropriate chapter title for your readings.
  • Techniques of Psychotherapy and Counseling examines counseling as process within a select few conceptual frameworks such as psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, gestalt, and cognitive-behavioral models. Such helping relationships differ in approach for individual and group models, yet all models have commonalities. Shared elements include identifying issues prominent in the beginning phase of a therapeutic alliance, the middle phase (working through), and termination. For purposes of our class we will concentrate our efforts on understanding Teyber’s work for individual counseling and Yalom’s approach for working with groups.
