The research paper, eight to 10 pages, will be based on a selected topic, which focuses on one aspect of the black experiences between 1865 and 2000. If possible, your research should somehow add to the existing historiography rather than merely rehash old materials. The paper should be based on several monographs (at least seven books or nine substantial journal articles, or a combination of both). In addition, to these secondary sources, you are to have primary sources. You should have at least six substantial primary sources. No exception will be made for lack of sufficient number of primary sources. There are many primary sources available on the topic. You should make sure that you select a topic, where you are able to get enough primary sources in a timely manner.
DO NOT USE MLA or AP styles to cite sources! In other words, do not cite in the text of the paper. You must use footnotes or endnotes (not both) for the paper to be graded. Consult Kate Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Thesis and Dissertations, found in the reference section of the main library or bookstore. Follow examples, marked “b” for bibliography, and those, marked “n” for footnotes or endnotes. You must include a bibliography, placed at the end of paper. Please follow examples exactly as they appear in Turabian, including indents, spacing, punctuation, etc. Do not include a table of contents or outlines with paper. Do number the pages. Place a blank sheet after the title page. You may include maps, pictures, drawings, charts, etc., but these do not count toward the required number of pages. Do not use any maps or photos unless they are used to discuss a particular point in the paper. They should be cited just as written sources are cited. Use regular type sizes (12 font); paper printed with unusually large fonts and wide margins will not be graded. Margins should be an inch except the left margin, which should be one ½ inches if you place paper in a binder. Do not use folders/binders from which the paper has to be removed to be graded.
