- Look at the “deep story” Hochschild creates in Chapter 9 and then tells to those she interviewed. How is this story different than the story liberal elites tell about the white rural folks Hochschild is studying in Louisiana? If someone asked you to explain which story was the true one, what would you say? Is the problem here a disagreement about “the facts”? And would you aim to challenge one story or the other—to convince one side or the other—to change their story by marshalling facts? If it is not about “the facts,” what is it about? Could divisiveness and lack of communication be bridged by dialogue? Or would it (also) take a political struggle to change national priorities and policies to begin to bridge that dialogue?
