The Economist magazine article titled “America’s Reservoirs Are Drying Up”.
“In 2021 California shut down a power station at Lake Oroville, one of the state’s largest
reservoirs, when water levels fell below what is needed for electricity generation. A study
from Oak Ridge National Laboratory warns that government-owned reservoirs in Idaho,
Oregon and Washington could see hydropower generation decrease during summer
months. The term “dead pool” will join “megadrought” on the lips of Americans in the
summer of 2023, as some reservoirs approach the level where they can no longer send
water downstream, let alone generate electric power.” (Chapter 9: Replenishable but
Depeletable Resources: Water; Chapter 7: The Transition from Deptetable to
Renewable Resources; Chapter 16: Climate Change)
In your opinion, what are the economic impacts of reservoir? How do droughts affect
water supply and demand by water sources (i.e. surface water and groundwater)? Analyze
the direct and ripple effects of low storage in major reservoirs in California’s San Joaquin
Valley under exceptional drought conditions and discuss the possible solutions.
Key words: Climate Change; Water scarcity; Reservoirs; Surface Water; Goundwater
Pumping; Water Rights
