This assignment is a personal narrative, which means that you should write a story about yourself in light of the intercultural communication theories we have studied so far this semester. These theories should inform your response to two types of questions. The first questions you should consider are: “who am I as a cultural being?” or “what does it mean to be me in this world(or in the U.S.)?” The second questions you should consider are: “how have I come to be me?” or “who/what has led me to view myself as a cultural being in the ways that I do?” You will want to cite at least 2-3 concepts from your textbook, course readings, or lectures that has helped you to shape your narrative.
Consider the readings by Gloria Anzaldúa and W.E.B. DuBois as exemplars of a personal narrative that use personal stories and reflections in order to theorize experiences and aspects of identity. Note that these scholars engage themes of power, privilege, marginalization, and resistance differently. These are all concepts that are absolutely appropriate for your narrative and themes everyone has the capacity to write about.
